✍️ Screenwriting in the Age of Climate Change w/ Good Energy
When: Saturday, September 21 from 3:00 to 4:00PM
Format: Workshop
There are so many ways climate change can show up in our scripts. But right now less than 3 percent of TV and film include any reference to the crisis. In this one-hour workshop, we’ll demonstrate how easy it is to bring a Climate Lens™ to any story, in any genre. We'll investigate different tools to incorporate climate change portrayals, look at case studies, and practice applying this lens through writing prompts and a mock writers’ room.
⚡️ Electrified and Fossil Free Productions w/ Rewiring America
When: Saturday, September 21 from 4:30 to 5:30PM
Format: Panel
The science is clear: we can't combat the climate crisis unless we stop burning fossil fuels. Yet, it's still mostly gas and diesel-burning vehicles and appliances appearing on screen and powering our sets. What should creatives do about it? This panel focuses on how to advocate for using the most effective and often overlooked options that will both inspire audiences to reduce emissions and keep your set pollution-free. During this conversation, panelists will outline the opportunities and obstacles to going electric on set, show how ditching fossil fuels can benefit production schedules and budgets, and how to approach both on- and offscreen decisions.
🌅 Inspiring Climate Action: Entertainment’s Many Pathways to Impact w/ Rare
When: Saturday, September 21 from 6:00 to 7 :00 PM
Format: Panel
Can entertainment help inspire the action we need to address climate change? Storytelling is often recognized for its ability to change hearts and minds – but is there solid evidence to back these anecdotal claims? Social scientists and creative professionals from Rare’s Entertainment Lab will synthesize the unique abilities of film and TV to inspire change, share the latest research on this topic, and discuss the varied pathways stories can take to make impact in the world.
🎥 Putting Climate on Both Sides of the Camera
When: Sunday, September 22 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Format: Panel
All of our actions affect the climate, so what can we do when making our next movie, TV series, or social media video to reduce our impact and emissions on set? Join Mari Jo Winkler, EP of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, Kati Johnston, EP of BULL, Heidi Kindberg, VP Sustainability at Warner Bros. Discovery, and Emellie O’Brien, Founder and Chief Impact Officer of Earth Angel by TheGreenShot for an insightful discussion that explores the intersection of storytelling and the modern principles of sustainability in production. This session will discuss the innovative methods employed by productions at different budget levels to promote sustainability throughout the production process, including renewable energy usage, waste reduction initiatives, and the incorporation of green technologies in filmmaking. The panel will be moderated by Stephanie Dawson.
🎓 Filmmaking as a Classroom: A Documentary Practice for the Climate Crisis
When: Sunday, September 22 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Format: Panel
For her documentary Hollow Tree, director Kira Akerman used filmmaking as a classroom, and developed a documentary practice for the climate crisis through experiential learning and observation. In this workshop, Akerman will describe her filmmaking process. A conversation with Hollow Tree's protagonists and the workshop's participants will follow.
